School Calendar Approval Process on Hold Pending IDOE Guidance:
Approval and publication of the Ankeny Schools 2015-2016 school calendar is currently on hold pending guidance from the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) regarding new rules for school start dates. This guidance is expected in January, after which the school district will continue its calendar approval process and announce the availability of the school calendar to parents.  The IDOE has informed school districts that they will not automatically grant waivers to start the school year early, as in the past.  This clearly has great implications for Ankeny Schools due to the high percentage of students who earn post-secondary dual credits through Advanced Placement (AP) courses.  Additional guidance from the IDOE is expected in January. We apologize for any inconvenience this delay in publication may cause.
Classes to be in session on April 24 snow make-up day:
Due to classes being cancelled for inclement weather on January 7, Ankeny Schools will use the April 24 “Built in Snow Day” shown on the district calendar to make up the missed day.  Instead of being a day off from school, regular classes will be in session and students will attend school on Friday, April 24.
Prairie Trail Parent Donates Art
Prairie Trail parent Ryan Jones, father to current 2nd grade students, Carson and Sydney Jones was visiting Prairie Trail Elementary last year and noticed a student display of colorful paper and ceramic bowls. These particular artistic forms were inspired by the famous glass artist, Dale Chihuly.

This art display triggered a connection with Ryan, who regularly spends a few hours a month at Iowa State University creatively working with glass forms himself. Mr. Jones has created glass art in the form of fish, flowers, and bowls. This Prairie Trail parent thought the third graders who make ceramic and paper “Chihuly” bowls in art class each year, would enjoy having one of his pieces so he contacted Mrs. Bingham, Prairie Trail’s art teacher. The students can now actually touch the glass, view the colored frit that were added in to the design, feel the wavy edges, and enjoy this 3D art form. Our students are so lucky to have this piece on display in the art room not just for visual enjoyment but also to connect to the process of producing an aesthetically pleasing form. We are thankful to Mr. Jones’ generosity!

Take appropriate steps to help keep Ankeny students and schools healthy -
You may have noticed a number of news reports lately about the flu.  Flu season is definitely upon us, and our nurses want to remind everyone of procedures that can help minimize the spread of flu.
On behalf of all Ankeny Schools students and staff, thank you for taking time to follow these guidelines and help to keep our schools healthy.
